How Does A Visual Artist Survive Covid

Bridgman, June 29, 2020: It’s a challenge many visual artists are facing in the middle of this global pandemic and Pamela Kirkham is no exception. How can an artist make a living when art exhibitions are cancelled or if they take place at all, are done virtually? Pre-Covid sales of original artwork have depended mainly upon direct contact with collectors. Now that the number of people allowed at in- person events is limited, less people see the work, resulting in less income. Her solo show at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Kalamazoo that was scheduled for June has been postponed indefinitely, and an upcoming show in Barcelona, Spain, at Art Metropole Europe has been tentatively re-scheduled to take place October 15 – 19th, 2020. Whether or not that exhibition actually transpires or when, depends on if the pandemic has slowed to an acceptable level by that time.
